Workers have been driving massive steel pilings into the ground for weeks, but construction didn’t officially start on the new refinery in Louisiana until Wednesday, February 3. When it is completed in 2011, the plant will have a capacity of 3,100 tons per day, making it one of the largest capacity sugar refineries in the United States. Imperial will continue to operate its current refinery adjacent to the new refinery until the facility is operational.
